About the NAACP
National Association
for the Advancement of
Colored People
Founded in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation’s oldest and most influential civil rights organization. Established through an interracial collaboration of prominent leaders—including W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington, Moorfield Storey, and Ida B. Wells—the NAACP has remained steadfast in its mission to combat racism, advance equity, and protect the rights of communities of color and other marginalized groups.
